The Dynamics of Dental Assisting

- Written by Dr. Tasha Maria Knight, DDS

After being in the dental industry for over 10 years, I felt like I was misled by the industry. I could not find a dental assistant that could add value to the work that is done on a daily basis and to help make my business prosper at its highest level for myself and the patients.
The Dynamics of Dental Assisting will help with creating a systematic way for the assistant to apply his or her organizational skills to the process of completing a dental procedure and will provide a method for the doctor to train staff.
My frustration as a doctor and a clinician was in a relentless cycle of replacing staff, with resulting loss of valuable time, while losing patients because they could feel my tension of not having the assistance I needed at eh current time of services.

Our Curriculum

The MA Institute offers a comprehensive approach to educating the next generation of Dental Assistants for front office and back office duties. This curriculum includes everything students need to be ready for their first dental assisting job, including being chairside ready. It's designed to teach students to be effective in private dental practices, as well as tailored for dental practices that need qualified dental assistants. It can be adapted for an 18-month program or 24-month program.

ONE: Classroom Materials

The classroom materials will come in the form of PowerPoint presentations that the instructors can use during class. The presentations tie directly to the chapters of the coursebook and the curriculum.

TWO: Book

The Dynamics of Dental Assisting course book is the foundation of the program. It is used to develop the in-class and online class materials as well as the lab exercises, tests, and quizzes.

THREE: Lab Exercises

The lab exercises are an important addition to the program. This allows the students to get hands on experience. It raises the “chairside readiness” level of your dental assisting students.

FOUR: Quarterly Lectures

Dr. Knight will lecture students in an “Ask the Doctor” setting once a Quarter as an added bonus. It will increase their understanding of how to support the dental practice and be a team member.

Problems With Other Curriculums

Students are not chairside ready

Doesn’t leverage technology (i.e., no app or PowerPoint presentations for the students they can access anywhere, anytime)

Private dentists have to re-train the students, won’t recruit students from the school’s program

Don’t cover front office requirements, like monthly financial quotas

We Can't Do It Alone

For the assistant and the doctor, there is a disconnection and the ongoing cycle continues.

1What is a Dental Assistant?
Dental Assistant: An auxiliary trained healthcare worker who provides direct support to the dentist, and who has been delegated to do intraoral dental procedures. Expanded Duties Assistant: A certified person who has completed the education, training, and testing of the Dental Assistant National Exam or America Dental Assistant Association. This person aids a dentist in radiography and dental laboratory work.
2What Are the Different Types of Dental Assistants?
  • 1. Educator Assistant: An assistant who can explain what each of the dental procedure are and what the doctor will be doing for today's treatment.
  • 2. Salesperson Assistant: An assistant that can sell the dental procedure and dental products to the patient for whom the dentist has recommended the treatment.
  • 3. Housekeeping Assistant: An assistant that sterilizes and organizes the office, and keeps inventory of dental supplies and instruments.
  • 4. Clinician Assistant: An assistant that knows the dental procedures which the doctor will use to complete treatment and how to care for the patient's needs. This assistant knows all equipment that is to be used and maintained to efficiently assist the dentist in treatment.

If all four of the above qualities are met in one assistant, it is excellent, but it is normally not the case. Often, the dentist may hire an assistant with two or three of the qualities, thus limiting the type of dental assistant the dental office needs.
